Paul George Declines Option, Opts to Test Free Agency

Veteran shooting guard Paul George has declined his $48.7 million option with the Clippers and will enter free agency, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

Sources have told ESPN that George will visit with the Clippers, 76ers and Magic, beginning late Sunday. The nine-time All-Star averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists this season with LA. He shot career highs of 47.1% from the field, 41.3% from 3-point range and 90.7% from the free throw line.

LA Clippers

Despite opting out, George still has the option to return to Los Angeles. Forward Kawhi Leonard received a three-year, $153-million extension in January, so George will be owed a hefty sum of money if he returns to LA.

Philadelphia 76ers

The Sixers have plenty of talent to support George. Despite being injured for a good chunk of this past season, Joel Embiid can still make plays. Philly has a solid young core which includes freshly-drafted rookie Jared McCain and Tyrese Maxey, making the City of Brotherly Love an appealing destination for George.

Orlando Magic

The Magic are a young team, with no players older than 29 on their roster. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner provide great size and talent, with both 6-foot-10 forwards combining to average over 40 points per game in 2023-2024. George could provide a much-needed veteran presence in Orlando to help the Magic’s young core develop into a dominant force in the NBA.
